The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
