The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
