Catherine's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.

The 1,600 guests will hear a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including award-winning actors.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to young musicians aided by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
